Winter is coming!
Colder temperatures bring problems to your home’s roof. You should be aware of these common problems during the fall and winter seasons, so that you can prepare ahead of time. In areas where the snow and ice are plentiful, such as New England, your roof needs to be strong and durable.
Some common issues we see are:
Condensation. When warm air meets cool air, condensation occurs. This can cause problems in your attic, as condensation often leads to mold and mildew, while also regulating your home’s temperature and cutting down on energy costs. You may not think that your attic is related to the health of your roof, but if there is improper ventilation in your attic, ice dams can form, and your roofs overall health can be weakened.
As previously mentioned, ice dams can be problematic for your roof. These dams are formed by ice and water becoming trapped under your roofs shingles. When the upper parts of your roof and the lower parts of your roof meet in the middle, the ice forms a blockage in your gutters. While the water pools behind the blockage, it can run back into your home through cracks in your exterior. This will damage your home and cost you hundreds in repairs to your roof. The way to take steps against the formation of ice dams is to be sure your roof is properly insulated, and that your attic has good air circulation.
Lastly, icicles! Icicles become an issue in the same weather conditions that ice dams do. With sunny days and freezing temperatures, water melts, and then hangs off of your roof causing dangers to yourself and your pets. Aside from dangers to yourself, icicles put a lot of pressure on your roof! To prevent icicles from forming, keep your gutters clear.
